Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
Our bibles show us the commandments God has given us and the laws laid down by God for us to follow. Both of these give us direction and purpose in our lives.
But what are laws and commandments worth if they are not going to be upheld and enforced?
When we get into trouble for doing something wrong it is so that we can learn what is right, and turn away from wrong.
God has given us everything, but we have to live by those rules and accept what happens if we don’t!

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
If you look at the Old Testament you find a set of scriptures that gives you direction, commandment, prophecy and hope.
If you look at the New Testament you find a set of scriptures that shows that direction in action, the commandments relived and strengthened and prophecies fulfilled and hope secured.
If ever there is an apt description of God’s Word it is told here; it is like a bright light showing us clear direction in our lives.
God gave us His promises and kept His promises so we can trust in Him with confidence.

Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
I am always glad to be able to read the bible because of the joy that it brings to be in knowing the gospel.
What God has made available to us through our bibles is the truth that He wants us to hear and know; not some novel or guide book.
God wants us to take what is written and allow it to sink deep into our hearts so that is grows us from the inside out.
That light will grow on the inside until it shines through and out for the rest of the world to see.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
Without our spirits our bodies are but lumps of flesh and bone; they may be remarkable but they would be lifeless without our spirits.
Though we may live and be full of life on earth, we are dead to God unless we have His Spirit which He gives to us.
When we are born in the Spirit of God we gain a new life with Him toward which the mortal body we live in profits nothing.
Jesus wants us all to have the Holy Spirit so that we can enjoy life to the fullest with Him.

Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
How are we going to walk in the Spirit? The best explanation comes with friends again…
When we stay close to friends, get to know them, get to know what they like and dislike, then we can be more of a friend to them.
Being a friend means caring for others and putting them first in your life instead of yourself.
If you want to be called a friend of God then you have to treat Him like a friend and put Him first; but first get to know Him and what He likes and dislikes.

Galatians 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Some people ask how it is possible to avoid sin after they have come to know Christ; they ask the question out of ignorance because they do not yet know the power of God!
I know, because I have been there. For a long time I would marvel at how others could avoid things or say no to temptation because I continued to trip up and fall.
It is only by walking with God and allowing Him to guide you that you will be able to avoid things. Yes you will still see those trappings but you may not want to go there.
Trust more in God and not your own weaknesses.

1 Thessalonians 2:12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
It must be a wonderful thing to be called the best in the world for something… but with that is going to come a certain amount of duty as people expect you to be good.
Being the best in the world and then acting like a rebel is not going to endear people to you.
When we call ourselves Christians we should be acting like it to show them we are what we say.
We may not be the best Christians but we should be doing our best for Christ who is everything!

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
In order to get the best possible start a formula 1 driver will position their car as close to the line as possible and on the sweetest spot to get the best launch (or start); it’s all about getting to that first corner first!
That is the type of outlook we should have in our lives with Christ. We should be trying to get ourselves in the best position now so we can live for Christ as well as possible.
Christ has called each of us to work with Him. We need to be ready and willing to do our best for Him.

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible.
The words of the angel must have shaken Mary as she listened to what was to come. I believe these words sunk deep and stuck in her heart.
When we read about Mary later in the bible we find that she has no problem believing God and trusting that He is able to do anything.
We all have our doubts at times and then we must remember these words spoken to Mary “with God nothing is impossible”.
God is God of heaven and earth, God of all creation and God of all time; trust Him who is faithful!

Jeremiah 32:17 Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.
When we get stressed we need to lay things down before The Lord before they get too far; easier said than done for many of us, but oh so true!
God is our creator who has made heaven and earth which means He set everything in motion and keeps it all together.
We should all be falling apart, but God keeps us together when we give things back to Him.
Don’t hold on until your world falls apart; give it to God so He can guide you.

Mark 10:27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”
When Jesus reminded the disciples that it is impossible for us to get into heaven through anything we do He also gave them a way in!
No matter how many good acts we do, how much we give to the poor and needy, how much we achieve in life, nothing will open the gates of heaven for us. It is Christ alone that opens those gates for us.
I love doing things for God and for other people but I know none of that counts toward me going to heaven; it is only the fact that I believe in Christ and have personally asked Him to forgive me that counts!
Ask Christ into your life today. It counts!

Mark 14:36 And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
When Jesus was facing the awful realisation of what He was about to go through for us, He lifted up His own prayers to God to show just how distraught He was.
There is no use trying to hide how troubled we are to God because He sees us from the inside and not the outward appearance we give to everyone else.
But do not try to force God’s hand by telling Him what he should be doing; trust Him to guide you through the best path for you because He does know what is best!

Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
There will be times when we really do feel like we are trapped, encircled and have no way out; and sometimes God allows us to feel like that!
How can a loving and caring God allow that to happen to us? Well, when hardship comes into our lives we look more earnestly to God and our requests take on a new meaning.
God wants us to be earnest and meaningful in our prayers no matter how much we feel trapped or even on top of the world.
Make sure God is at the top of your list each and every day!

Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.
When we become weighed down with life on earth we need to look to God to give us the joy and peace He wants us to have.
Giving God control in our lives is a lot harder than you think when you have been taking care of yourself for a long time; so why not start with the heavy burdens.
Just like someone who loves you, God does not want to see you struggling under stress, anxiety and other worries.
God’s love for you means He cares deeply for you!

1 Peter 5:7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Depending on God can seem like a daunting thing when you first look at life because we are brought up in a very material world.
We do depend on food, water and even light to survive and we trust that we are able to work hard enough to supply for and cover those needs.
What Peter is writing here is that we give up the anxiety we face for the supply of such needs to God. God provides daily needs for all other creatures who blindly trust in the unseen.
God wants us to show faith by having a form of that blind and absolute trust in Him.

1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
John was a Jew and he learned from Christ that this atonement of sin was not just something to do with the Jews but to do with the whole world!
God created the whole world but worked with the Jews so that we would have our example to look to and learn from.
I sometimes count myself to be very lucky that I am a gentile and that I have come to learn about God through love and support and not through religion.

Exodus 24:7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.”
How many times have you said that you would do something but have not done it?
Not just the times you said you would just to get someone off your back, but the times you forgot or the time you could not or should not…
When God makes a promise to us, He keeps it and fulfils it. When we make a promise to Him, are we going to be as fervent to keep it as He is toward us?

Matthew 26:28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
When we remember that we live in a time of grace we must never forget what price was paid for us to receive that grace.
Christ willingly laid down His own life, allowed His own blood to be shed, allowed the people to crucify Him, just so that we would have our debt paid before we own it all.
Christ died before we committed the sins. Christ died because He knew we needed Him. Christ died because of His love for us.
Are we willing to remember what he has done and share that?

Isaiah 49:8 Thus says the Lord: “In an acceptable time I have heard You, and in the day of salvation I have helped You; I will preserve You and give You as a covenant to the people, to restore the earth, to cause them to inherit the desolate heritages;
God hears our cries; not when He wants to, but always. He may not answer in our own time because He knows when the time is right on not us.
God does remember the promises that he has made but makes sure that He fulfils those when the time is right so that he will get the glory and we will get the blessing.
God is not here to destroy mankind but to bring him back to His side through repentance.
God wants us to be His children and not to try and rule over Him!

2 Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
You may be asking “how can I receive a free gift in vain?” And the obvious answer would be that you cannot because it is a gift that is freely available to us.
I believe that people still do take the word of God, the Gospel, the Scriptures, our bibles, whatever you would call it, in vain. They read but don’t accept. They read but don’t believe it all.
God has given us His Word because it is the truth. We cannot presume to understand it all and need constant guidance from The Holy Spirit to show us what it means.
Continue receiving that guidance with grace.
