Proverbs 23:19 Hear, my son, and be wise; and guide your heart in the way.
If we do not listen to instruction then we are not going to be able to learn. If we ignore good instruction then we are being ignorant.
God has given us many people in our lives that can show us the truth and instruct us in the ways that we should go; but it is our choice as to whether we listen or not.
No matter what upbringing we have had, there has always been an example or a person that has been standing up for God as our example.
God is trying to give us the advice, we just need to listen and take it in!

Proverbs 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
Is it strange for you to read words like this saying that your father would be proudest when you did right but your mother would bear the grief if you did wrong?
We live in a very different world than when these words were written, but they still ring true in the sense that the head of the household will carry the pride, but the loving parent will bear the sorrow.
God has given us the example of love and marriage so that we can have functioning families who help and support each other; however you define it, we need families who love God!

Proverbs 13:1 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
It is a wise person who can show you what to do to get things right, but a wiser still person who will listen diligently to the instruction.
Anyone can follow instructions and make things look good, but it takes a wise person to accept what is being said and make it into something worthwhile.
The wisest words are not going to come from people who chase after the world and its riches but from the heart of a wise man of God.
Listening to God is one thing; following up what is said takes courage and wisdom.

Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.
As the disciples followed Jesus around they learned how to behave like Christ and to love others as Christ loved others.
Being a follower of Christ for us means learning how to do the same, learning how to pick up on His example and take it with us into our worlds.
Children pick up on things much quicker than adults do because they do not have preconceived ideas about everything.
Be more like a child and accept what Christ is teaching you and stop trying to prove things!

John 1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
What do you think Jesus’ words would be if He were to describe you in one sentence?
Nathanael was an upright man who could be trusted but he had to see for himself whether this person Philip was talking about was in fact the Messiah or not.
Jesus knew him before Nathanael knew Jesus, knowing he was an Israelite of good standing; but Jesus knew him when he first called out to God in prayer!
Jesus is always listening!

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
If you are like me then you would be forgiven for thinking that this statement stretches the truth for us on some days because I certainly do not feel like this sometimes.
But it is very true. God is the one who created us with these incredible minds; not just our brains but our being.
We have this immense ability to love people, even if it is directed at one or two special people; that love we have is powerful and forgiving.
We don’t all have the same love but each different for different people. Real love is amazing. Try it!

Psalm 31:24 Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord.
There will be times when things do not go according to plan. There will be times when you feel like everything is going wrong; and maybe it is…
But in order to get through these times you need to be strong and have courage. God is willing to give you both strength and courage if you will but ask.
Knowing that He is willing should give you hope and spurn you forward.
Knowing how much God cares should give us peace in our hearts.

Psalm 27:14 Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!
Waiting on God is difficult if you are used to getting up and doing things; but God wants us to be stronger by realising that we can wait on Him!
God leads us away from things in our lives that are holding us back. He leads us toward things which will build us up.
But he also knows we will grow weary along the way and wants us to depend on Him more so that we can know He is supporting us all along the way.
So be patient and listen to Him.

Psalm 37:7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
It is sometimes hard to watch other people being prosperous and knowing that they are working against God.
But then when you see them striving for things which you know will not last you begin to feel sorry for them as well.
We should be an example to others showing them how much comfort and peace we get from serving God even if we are not prosperous in worldly terms.
Rest in God and enjoy His comfort which will last for eternity.

Lamentations 3:26 It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
We have this wonderful knowledge that Christ is good to those who trust in Him and believe in Him.
We have the amazing truth that God is willing to forgive our sins that we bring to Him.
Is it not then our duty to wait patiently for Him? Is it not a good idea to give God time to work in our lives?
God will work according to His time and not to our timetable; be patient.

Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.
The people from Nineveh heard what Jonah said and they repented of their evil ways; but a few generations down the line and it was all bad again.
Unless we continue to pass on the Gospel to the next generation, they have no hope in finding Christ as their friend.
It is easier to show people the truth than to try and teach them after the fact because it is easier to rest in God than to wrestle with Him!
Show people how much God means to you now.

Psalm 145:9 The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.
It is always good to be reminded that when we find a friend in Jesus we will always have Him as our friend!
Not only does He put up with so much from each of us, he is also forgiving and just and continues to be so for all who have asked for forgiveness.
I know I don’t deserve what God blesses me with, but I know that He will continue to be merciful as I continue to make mistakes and bring them to Him.

Psalm 41:9 Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
There will be times when you wonder why you made friends with some people as they do things against you; but remember why you made friends in the first place.
God wants us to be able to make friends so that we can share what we have with them.
What is the greatest treasure that we have? Christ Jesus! We need to make friends so that we can share Christ with them.
Don’t get hung up when they turn against you because they are turning against Christ and not you if you have been open and honest with them…

Matthew 26:50 But Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
The difference between man and Jesus is that man says things but Jesus does them!
When Judas came to betray Jesus he was not greeted as an enemy but as a friend. Jesus was demonstrating His love whilst others simply talked about it.
Being a Christian means making a difference and not talking about one.
Jesus knew there would be a price to pay, but He continued on to make the difference no matter what the price!

Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
When Jesus went into the garden to pray it was not just for a quick few lines of prayer and back out again; Jesus opened His heart to God the Father.
When we come forward to pray with and to God we need to make sure that it is coming from the heart as well and that may mean spending more time that we first thought.
Spend time alone if you have to to make sure your mind and heart are clear of daily garbage before you start your earnest prayers.
That way they come from your heart…

Colossians 4:2 Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;
Prayer is not just a part of life that you do now and again when in a spot of trouble; prayer is something you need to hold up constantly and remembering what God does for you.
Far too often we ask in a prayer and then forget about it. God wants us to mean it when we pray and then to look back and see how He answers our prayers.
Giving God the thanks for answering our prayers will make our faith that much stronger as we see what God can do!

Luke 6:12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
How often do you get down on your knees for some serious prayers? I don’t mean the quick 5 or 10 minutes you have every day… When was the last time you spent an hour or more in prayer?
It may well be difficult for us to stop and pray for more than an hour because our minds are full of all sorts of things, but doing so will make a big difference to you and your walk with God.
Talking to a friend can be easy and can take up all night, so why not treat Christ as a close friend and spend some quality time with Him?

1 Samuel 15:11 “I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments.” And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night.
When Saul turned his back on God, it was Samuel who got to hear the bad news from God, news that was to grieve him to the extent that he had a bad night’s sleep.
There are many things which prevent us having a good sleep and knowing that someone you care about is in trouble is just one of those things.
What Samuel showed was great compassion as he lifted up this bad situation straight to God and continued all night.

Psalm 119:136 Rivers of water run down from my eyes, because men do not keep Your law.
What do you do when you hear someone swearing or using Christ’s name in vain? What do you do when you see someone blatantly breaking God’s laws?
I always get upset when I hear people treat God with no respect at all… when they see that I am upset they do sometimes ask why and I can tell them why!
We need to be God’s witnesses all the time and with passion! Give God the reverence and respect He alone deserves.

Isaiah 65:17 For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.
It is right and proper to be a good steward with what God allows you to have, but it should not be the focus of your life.
God wants us to remember that we do not take anything with us when we die and trying to build up treasures here on earth is not fulfilling.
God does not want us to get bogged down in the hurt and anger here on earth either but to look forward to the joy and peace we will have in heaven with Him.
Look onward and upward!
