Ecclesiastes 4:4 And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Have you noticed that the strongest forms of envy follow the worldliest things in life; the things we cannot take with us when we die!
We know we cannot do anything with riches after we die, and yet we still envy; this is why envy is the strongest emotion that destroys instead of building up.
Trying to chase after envy is about as good as trying to capture the wind in your hands; you can feel it and know it, but cannot do anything about it!

Genesis 37:11 And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
When Joseph started to have prophetic dreams that were telling of things to come his brothers did not like what was being said because they could see a pattern emerging that would mean they would have to serve him!
He was the youngest and should have had to look up to them, but these dreams were saying the opposite!
It was only his father who could see that these were coming from God and that they should be observed, believed and kept in their hearts. So that is what he did – he kept them in his heart.

Mark 9:10 So they kept this word to themselves, questioning what the rising from the dead meant.
Has anyone asked you to keep something to yourself when you have not really understood what is going on anyway?
Some people find it very hard to keep secrets. Some people just need to tell the whole world everything!
Jesus wants us to tell the world about Him; but first and foremost He wants us to know Him before we go out and tell everyone! That means getting to grips with His Word to find out what He means to us so we can show others the truth.

Matthew 16:7 They discussed this among themselves and said, ‘It is because we didn’t bring any bread.’
When Jesus warned His disciples about the leaven or yeast, He was talking figuratively rather than explicitly. The disciples started thinking about the physical and assumed He was talking about bread because they forgot to buy any!
How many times do we not listen to others properly and get the wrong end of the story?
God wants us to listen to Him carefully and understand what it is He requires from our lives, not just to listen to the words and do something!

Luke 12:1 In the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Have you ever been in a huge crowd of people; maybe a crowd coming into or exiting a huge stadium? I always have this weird feeling… what if something goes wrong whilst we are all stuck here!
When you walk through city streets or through any crowd you hear snippets of conversations that others are having. If we listened to them all we may well get upset through what others say.
God does not want us to get caught up in what others are talking about; instead He wants us to focus on His Word.

Ecclesiastes 12:14 For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.
How often do you look at the evil people in this world and ask how they can get away with the things they do? Why doesn’t God stop them?
The simple answer is that they do not fully understand this statement; Jesus will judge everyone according to their works!
It will not be compared to what we think we can get away with but according to God’s Word itself that He gave us from the beginning!
Nothing we do can ever be hidden from God…

Romans 2:16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
There is no getting away from the fact that God’s Word is the truth and what is written in it will happen if it has not already done so!
Jesus is the one who laid down His own life for our sins and He is the one that is going to judge every secret we have tried to hide from the world when the time is right.
Christ’s judgment will be according to His righteousness which is described to us as best we understand through His Word; so we had better believe His Word before we go too far!

Hebrews 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
Christ is Lord of everything! He is not just Lord of the people of Israel, nor just the Lord of Christians. Everything is under His command from the smallest of creatures to the largest stars in the heavens.
It is God who knows all and sees all and not man. Yes we have managed to discover many hidden gems in God’s universe, but it is still God’s universe!
When we are done with our lives here on earth it is Christ who we have to give an account to!

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
When God sent Samuel in to anoint the future King of Israel He told Samuel that there was a big difference between what God sees and what man sees.
Israel had chosen Saul as king because he was a mighty man, tall and powerful and probably very imposing. Most people look up to powerful people and listen to them; so man’s choice is not always right.
God knows what is going on inside people’s hearts and minds and so can make a perfect choice rather than a good guess as we do!

Proverbs 21:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts.
How many times have you just accepted what someone says when they say “you just don’t know what you’re doing” or something similar?
It is hard to take that sort of criticism, especially when you have been doing something for a long time and someone new points out a fault; but sometimes we just have to admit that we get things wrong!
God needs us to realise that we do get things wrong and that we have to accept His ways are righteous and correct. We need to follow His ways and not our own…

2 Corinthians 10:18 For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
Like a friend of mine, I have never been comfortable with others saying how good or faithful I am because I can see so much more room for improvement!
I do what I believe God wants me to do; I know I have many faults so I have to try hard sometimes to achieve those goals. But I certainly do not seek approval from any man as to how good a servant I am!
God is the One I aim to please and I know I was not be able to please man when I am aiming for Christ’s approval!

Proverbs 27:2 Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.
It may seem a strange verse to have in a mini devotion, but how many times have you actually praised yourself in the past.
I know that I have done so many times in the past and I am still guilty of it time and time again, but when we come to serving God we must take a different approach.
We come as servants to God. As servants we should not praise ourselves nor should we wait on every breath to see what praise we get – instead we should get down and do God’s will, and that is all!

2 Corinthians 10:18 For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
We could probably think of all sorts of good things that we can say about ourselves and all of it could be true; but it is not up to us to glorify ourselves – that is God’s position.
As children of our God we should not be the ones bragging about how good we are because we are Christians and others are not! Let us never forget that we are sinners, just as is every man.
But we do have a sure prophecy in knowing that we are approved of God because we have placed our faith and trust in Christ our Saviour!

John 8:54 Jesus answered, "If I honour Myself, My honour is nothing. It is My Father who honours Me, of whom you say that He is your God.
What would you think of a person who had a big ceremony to honour themselves? Yes I know it’s a loaded question but that is the great humility that Christ showed here on earth.
Christ did not lift Himself up as anything more than the Son of God because that is what God had already proclaimed.
We must, equally, not try to lift ourselves up any more than being the servants of God that we are. God has made us servant for a reason – to glorify Him. Don’t take that away from God!

Acts 17:23 "for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:
TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:
Each time I read this verse I have pictures going round in my head about all the rows of gods that some religions have and how those people must grow weary of having to look in so many directions!
I thank my God daily that He alone is my salvation and that He alone is God of heaven and earth. It is to Him alone that I can confidently lift up my prayers knowing that He is listening!
Praise God!

John 4:22 "You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.
There are times when we need to stop and think about what we are doing; that time may well be right now!
God does not require us to go to a particular place, do a particular thing in the same way as it has always been done just so that He will listen to our prayers!
Don’t get hung up in worshipping without fully realising what you are doing and why you are doing it. Habits are not good because they take you away from God; they blind your heart!

Jeremiah 3:23 Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, And from the multitude of mountains; Truly, in the LORD our God Is the salvation of Israel.
Our salvation does not come from earthly things; no matter how grand and all-encompassing our world may be, salvation comes from our Lord alone!
People will lift up all manner of things instead of God just so that they can feel good or feel like they have some sort of worth.
If only people would look at God and realise that we are worth so much more just because it is God who considers us worth so much!

Psalm 121:1 I WILL lift up my eyes to the hills - From whence comes my help?
I love the way this Psalm starts because it shows humility, dependence, confidence and willingness all in the first few words!
We need to remember that our prayers do get lifted up to God and that we should be lifting up our prayers constantly, not just when we think we need to, but always.
And then we need to remember that God is listening; that should give us the confidence that He alone is willing and able to answer every one of our prayers.
God will answer, when we call!

Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
God is the one who does know what is best for each of us and He will try to direct us toward that goal so that we can achieve the best for us and Him. So where do we start?
Well, the starting point for anything with God is to stop and listen. Just stop being so involved with your own ways and listen to God.
While we are so focused on doing our own thing or doing what we think God or the church wants, or doing things the way we have always done, we are not listening properly to what God may want in our lives!

2 Timothy 2:24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.
There are times when we like to be able to prove ourselves better than others by showing them that we know more than them; and yes, we probably all fall into that category – especially as young children!
This verse actually warns about teachers of the word getting caught up in their own vain teachings rather than concentrating on the truth that God gives us to give to others.
As teachers we must always reach out in love and try to communicate as best we can to deliver the Gospel message.
