John 11:35 Jesus wept.

Why on earth was Jesus glad that Lazarus was dead? Why then did He cry?

We can guess at all of the reasons why Jesus wept openly at this stage but let us never forget the simplicity of this statement. Jesus cried because He has compassion!

So many times we try to read so much into things when the simplest answer is what we need to focus on. Jesus LOVES mankind! Just because get it wrong does not mean that Jesus stops loving us.

Know Jesus’ love. Accept Jesus’ love. Trust Jesus’ love.

John 11:15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”

Have you ever had something said to you that levelled you totally? I am sure that when Jesus said these words the disciples were speechless! Thomas’ reaction says a lot…

I am not talking about the things people say that hurt you or wind you up but those moments in time when someone says something that brings you to your senses and to your knees.

I am privileged to know someone who can do that to me so very easily. Will you allow Christ to be one of those people for you?

John 19:35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.

John wrote these words that we now have in our bibles because he was an eye-witness to what was happening. He wrote it down because he knew it to be the truth.

When we have eye-witness accounts in a court of law we believe what has happened because we trust someone who is willing to come forward and speak the truth as it happened.

Why then do we have any doubts about God’s Word being the truth? Why should we not believe people who have seen it when all we are faced with theories from the other side?

1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

We have a life on earth that will not last too long; mankind is learning a lot and extending that life, but it is still limited because our genes and bodies get corrupted.

God has given us the gift of an eternal life without corruption if we should go to Him and ask Him to forgive us of our wrong-doings. Those sins are what bring us down.

But Through what Christ has done for us on that cross, we are able to have an incorrupt, eternal life with Christ our Lord and God in heaven!

John 1:4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

When Jesus came into the world as a man, it was not that He had not already been with us from the beginning, but that He descended to that position to show us His love.

Jesus Christ, our Creator, has always been and will always be. He brought all life into this world and He has the ultimate power to take it all away.

Mankind would not be here without Christ no matter how much mankind would like to think that he could have evolved from some kind of random chance! We have a Creator God! Praise Him alone!

John 3:19 This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

It is a very sad state that people would rather hide in the darkness and do evil things than come out in the light and do what is righteous; but that seem to be where many people are.

This is not a new situation caused by a modern and corrupt society but something that has been with man from the beginning. Man has always chosen to hide in the darkness to avoid being found out!

That does not mean God cannot see us… it just means we lose sight of God…

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

We probably heard all manner of stories yesterday about people dying and other strange stuff; to me the most important death we can ever remember is Christ’s death on the cross.

It was through love that He gave His own life. It was because of His great love to each one of us! There was no evil intent or hidden meaning, just a simple truth…

God knew that He could pay for our sins if He allowed His own Son to take our place. So He did. What love!

Hebrews 5:5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.”

I think it truly amazing that all the time that Christ spent on earth was not set aside to glorify Himself but rather to bring glory to God the Father.

Christ had every right to bring glory to Himself because He is who He is; but He chose to bring glory to God in heaven instead.

How much better a place would this world be if none of us would lift up our own stations higher than we ought to but would rather bring glory to The One True God.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Old Testament points toward Christ coming to be our Saviour. The New Testament bears that out and then points toward what is yet to come.

This is the same that has been told from the beginning and the same that will be told right up until God takes us home to be with Him!

Christ has fulfilled God’s promise that He would send us a Saviour. Our bibles are a historical and factual record of what has happened and what is to come. Read it. Believe it!

1 Peter 1:25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

Each of us has a limited lifespan on earth, and each of the possessions we have too are limited. We may have a favourite bible, but the cover and pages soon wear out as we use it.

But the words that are held inside the bible will last forever because that is what God has promised us.

These are the words that Christ used to rebuke Satan and the same words that we need to learn to teach others with. This is the very word of God!

Matthew 5:18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Let us not get carried away by trying to figure out why the writer used Hebrew language or syntax but just to accept this phrase for what it is.

No part of God’s Law will ever be discarded until the whole of the law has been accomplished or completed!

We cannot ignore God’s law. We cannot ignore our bibles. Yes man makes mistakes but God’s Law stands firm and unchangeable! Don’t try to change it to suit yourself!

James 2:10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.

Would you try to drive a car that has got a wheel missing? How about sitting on a chair that has got a leg missing?

When we look at the obvious we don’t have to think too hard about what is right and wrong; but sin is not always that simple to spot from our point of view.

If we are inside the car already, we may not see one wheel missing. When we live our lives without caring for God’s ways we will not spot when we do things wrong until it may be too late… but we are still guilty…

Romans 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law.

God’s law is perfect and it will always be upheld by Him because He is perfect! Man’s laws are certainly not perfect because we see people get away with things because of holes in the law.

If we ignore the law totally then we will still be judged, even if it is just that we are judged according to what we do know.

God will not allow us to get away with everything just because we bury it under a really large carpet!

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Just because we live in a corrupt world does not mean that we have to live by those corrupt rules!

God has given each of us a beautiful mind that can discern many things. For some that mind is much more able than others, but to each of us He has given what we need to learn from Him.

It is hard to understand God’s ways, but by listening to Him we can continue to learn how best to approach the sinful world we live in. It is a case of listening though because the world can be very loud!

Ephesians 5:9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),

The one thing that we can be sure of is a change of attitude when we put our faith and trust in Christ alone.

When we continue to grasp at what the world can offer or continue to follow worldly ways then we will find that others will see the world through us and not see the fruits of the Spirit.

If we want the fruits of the Spirit to show then we have to make sure that God has room to work in our lives; that we are not pushing Him out and favouring the ways of the world!

John 7:37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

The last day of the feast of tabernacles was regarded as a great day, not because of the amount of sacrifices offered because they would offer less on this day. This day was regarded as great because the offering made on this day would be for the people of Israel themselves.

And just as David had done many years previously, they would pour out a water sacrifice.

What Jesus was saying here was that the sacrifices would never be as worthy as people following Him with their hearts. Jesus made an end to the need for sacrifices by being the perfect sacrifice for us all.

2 Samuel 23:16 So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord.

When the three mighty men teamed up they were able to get into the Philistine stronghold and draw fresh water from the well to bring back to their king.

They did this out of love and loyalty, being willing to sacrifice themselves for their king. But what David did must have made them wonder why they had risked everything!

David was after spiritual filling rather than fresh water. The price paid for fetching that water made it a suitable sacrifice to God, one that David did not take lightly!

Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

When we intertwine multiple cords together we get a rope that is much stronger than the sum of the cords put together; this happens because of the friction between the cords as well as a few other factors.

When we are placed together with other Christians we make a stronger force than just the individual parts joined together because of our differences and our similarities.

God wants diverse people to come together to make a stronger and more able church that can do more to glorify Him than individuals working for themselves.

Ecclesiastes 4:11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?

When God created us, He created us as man and woman, as companions. This was not just for reproduction but for so many facets in life.

God knows how much we do need companionship and how much more we can do when we are with another Christian rather than trying to go forward alone.

If we can get a spark out of two dull looking objects by hitting them together, then imagine how much God can get out of us when we team up with another Christian; and how much more when we are put together with the right person!

Ecclesiastes 4:5 Fools fold their hands and ruin themselves.

When we see what others have we may be envious of what they have. If we are willing to work to try and get what they have then that is one thing, but if we just sit back and expect things to happen then we will be in for a bit of a shock.

God does not expect us to stand around waiting for others to do our work for us. He wants us to use the gifts that He has given us to work toward glorifying Him in all that we do.

If we do not feed ourselves with the Word of God, we will be the ones who starve and look to others things to try and satisfy ourselves – but nothing will feed us like God’s Word!
