Psalm 4:2 How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood?

How many times does God have to ask this question? How many times do we turn the good God has done and shown us into something bad?

Human society and history are littered with so many things which we find distasteful, and yet we are the ones who have made it so (maybe not us personally, but the human race.)

Loving God and fearing Him should be the centre of our lives so we can promote Him and His ways. It is not such a big ask from our creator that we obey Him!

Jeremiah 17:5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord.

The Jews were the chosen people by God. As such they were told to place their full trust and faith in God; and yet they continued to put their faith and trust in the people around them such as the Egyptians or Assyrians.

God extended this to all people when Jesus came forward to give His life for us all. This means He does expect each of us to place our full faith and trust in Him and not in people.

This does not mean we give up on friendships and trusting those around us. Christ reminded us one of the greatest commandments is to love one another.

Psalm 146:3 Do not put your trust in princes, Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.

No matter how great a king, queen, prince or other human is, they are still just a human being. King David, though he was great and even appointed by God, did not desire the people to worship him.

It is the fool who lifts up themselves in place of God; God is the one who created us and not ourselves!

Don’t give up trusting others, though, because it is through friendships and mutual trust we move forward together and learn to live as God wants us to.

Psalm 118:8 It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man.

Who are you going to trust to build an aeroplane? The pilot or the engineer? I’ll go for the engineer any day!

Who are you going to trust to fly the plane? The pilot or the engineer? I’ll go with the pilot this time!

Jesus has more knowledge and power than all the engineers and pilots put together! Our trust should be placed firmly in Christ’s hands and not in the worldly ways around us!

God did not create us so we could be gods. Trust Him to do what He can do and leave the rest to God.

Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Jesus tried hard to make sure we do understand God’s law should not be grievous and impossible for us; He tells us here we should take anything to Him which we believe is too difficult for us to carry by ourselves.

Jesus came to give us a new life and a new beginning; one where we are able to go to Him with all our troubles and worries and allow Him to deliver us or give us rest.

I love Jesus; not just because He said this, but because He does it!

Matthew 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

God gave the Children of Israel many laws which seem impossible to keep. He did not do this so He could trip us up and blame us for doing things wrong.

God gave us laws to show us we could not keep all of the laws even if we wanted to – and we should want to.

But alongside that, man wrote many more laws and rules which are not right in God’s eyes, but to which He expects other people to stick with even though they cannot or will not.

Keep it simple and obey God!

Romans 2:21 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?

If you are willing to teach others you must be willing to listen to the same instructions which you give to others. Failing to do so would just be silly!

How many times in our lives have we done exactly that; told people what they should be doing and then not followed our own advice?

Just because we are willing to take our faults to Christ for forgiveness does not give us the right to go off and do it all again!

Psalm 50:17 Seeing you hate instruction And cast My words behind you?

If we are honest then none of us would really say we like to be told off or to be corrected; but what do you do when you are corrected?

Do you simply shrug off the correction and continue on in your own way because you think you are right, or do you take in what has been said and change?

God has given us many people in our lives who have obeyed instruction and have tried to pass on those instructions to us. If we ignore those instructions, then we are the fools!

1 Corinthians 6:10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

If we continue to break God’s rules, then we should not expect to be able to get into Heaven with Christ.

God cannot abide sin; but He is willing to forgive it and cleanse us from that part.

There is no lust, no matter how deep and insatiable, which is able to stop God forgiving us…

As long as we are willing to ask for forgiveness for our sins and try to turn away from them, we should be able to continue spreading God’s love.

Romans 3:10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;

Many of the words in this and the following verses come from the Old Testament where the prophets had been warning and in turn warned the people.

According to those rules and regulations we have fallen very short of the mark of righteousness laid down by God.

Our tendency is not toward righteousness but toward all the bad things we can think of to get away with!

Adam may have started out doing it all correctly, but, like us, he fell off the wagon.

Luke 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!

All of mankind is generally evil; not that we are all mass murderers but we have all sinned and come short of God’s rules and regulations.

And yet, even though we are all in line for the naughty prize, we are still able to forgive others and to give out any number of presents!

We all love to buy young children toys and gifts just to see them happy and rejoicing.

Have you stopped to think of all the things God has allowed into your life just so He can see us rejoice?

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

Think about what Jesus is saying He is giving this woman? Is it the Holy Spirit? Somehow I don’t think so; I think it is more likely to the Himself.

Jesus was going to give Himself for those people who did not yet believe. This woman became a believer based on what Christ was telling her.

Christ was giving a beautiful picture of His own sacrifice which was needed before she could become a believer and receive the Holy Sprit.

John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.

There is only one who came from Heaven and continues to be the living bread; the author and giver of life eternal, Christ Jesus.

You have just got to remind yourself of this fact now and again to realise just how lucky we are to have a Saviour who gave it all for us and continues to be there always and forever.

Jesus may have performed miracles giving out bread to thousands of people, but the bread talked about here is the spiritual bread which leads us to a life of glory with Him in Heaven.

Jesus physically gave Himself for us!

Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

Christ did not give up a prophet or a king for us, He did not sacrifice the biggest goat or anything else; He gave His own life for us.

Christ knew there would be nothing on earth which would be good enough to pay for our sin debt and to purify us enough to be with God.

He also knew not all of us would give our lives back to Him or would choose to follow Him; but He still came forward for those of us who were willing to take that step forward with Him.

Psalm 135:4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel for His special treasure.

God chose the people of Israel, the line of Judah for a reason. He chose them not because He loved them more than other people but because of their returned love.

God chose people who would love Him back and would bring glory to Him.

The church continues to grow far beyond the chosen few in those days to people all around the world who are willing to accept Jesus Christ as Saviour and King.

God looks to us more than gold and silver and other riches we often cannot see past – because of His great love for us!

Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the Lord, And besides Me there is no saviour.

I am very thankful there is only one God. I do not know how the early Greeks managed with so many different gods, or how the people in the East manage with a different god for each thing in their lives.

I like my life to be a bit ordered, though not too much so; but having to try and figure out just which god I should be talking to at any time would be a bit much!

I know my God does answer my prayers and I know He watches over me every minute of every day.

I know He is my Saviour and my everything!

Isaiah 43:25 I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.

Why have the previous verse after the last verse? Because we have to remember why God has done what He has for each of us.

He does not do this to make us happy to be alive; He does this for His own sake, so we can glorify Him with our lives.

He is the One who will forgive us when we bring our sins to Him. He has already promised to do this. But He does this so we can continue to bring Him the glory and not the other way round.

Yes, He loves us more than we can imagine; but He is still God Almighty!

Isaiah 43:26 Put Me in remembrance; Let us contend together; State your case, that you may be acquitted.

How many wonderful things have you read about God in your bible over the last year? How many of them do you actually remember?

Being able to quote scripture does take practise and patience; but being able to remember what the words meant to you will come a lot easier.

Remember the things God has allowed into your life. Remember what he has changed for you. Remember what He has shared with you and remember the time when He has carried you.

Trusting in God means remembering and believing.

1 Samuel 3:19 So Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.

When water falls to the ground it is not much use for drinking anymore; the earth will swallow it up and that is the end of your drinking water!

But Samuel was wise with the word he learned from God and with the instruction he got from God; he did not allow it to go to waste but used every word wisely.

When we hear God’s word from others we too should use them wisely and save them for when they are needed; remembering them and bringing the forward when required.

Judges 20:1 So all the children of Israel came out, from Dan to Beersheba, as well as from the land of Gilead, and the congregation gathered together as one man before the Lord at Mizpah.

When was the last time you saw a whole country all vote in the same manner? Most of the time we find people voting for different things and not agreeing with each other.

Here, all the people of Israel came together to talk as one; to agree on the same things and to work together.

To me, that is the essence of Christian life and I hope to be in a position one day where I am able to witness people all being together as one voice!

Sadly it is something we need to continue to pray for and hopefully work toward.
