Psalm 1:1  Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,

The more righteous we live our lives, the more we will find contentment.

The more we try to build up earthly goods, the more we will crave and lose.

God wants us to know we cannot gain happiness from earthly treasures...

Psalm 51:17  My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

If we set time aside for God, should we not put away the things of the world?

Opening ourselves to God in all honesty and with a humbleness which comes from deep within is more like the position we should be in with God!

Don’t just set aside time, make time and spend it wisely with God!

Psalm 86:7  When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me.

What happens when we are in distress? We call out to God for help!

What happens when the sinner next to you calls out for help?

Will you stop to tell them the good news?

Mark 1:14  After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.

One of the things we see in life is: life continues even when bad things happen!

We do get upset when bad things happen and we allow those bad things to cloud our view of life.

If we can look to God in everything instead of focusing on the evil, we will see a whole new way of life in Christ!

Feb 19: Matthew 25:41-46

Key Verse: Matthew 25:43
I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was ill and in prison and you did not look after me.

Devotion:
We often try to put the blame for things going wrong on other people or on world leaders; often the truth about those situations runs much deeper than simply blaming others! When Jesus was teaching people about righteousness, he often took real world examples and turned them on their heads. In this case He takes the real-world example of the poor and needy people in this world and talks as if they are directly linked to Him.

They are! Jesus cares deeply for all people in this world and sees the poor and needy as people who need help. He then looks at us in our semi-privileged positions and sees us as people who have the ability to use what we have to lessen the plight of the poor and needy. This is not Christ saying we need to give up all of our earthly belongings and give them to the poor; well, He is but not in the earthly way we think of it!

Christ’s ways are very different to our ways. When He sees we have plenty He sees the potential we have to share our plenty with the poor and needy. He may simply want us to set an example and show others we have a duty of care to all of His children – because we are all His children. We should be willing to make sure none of God’s children are in need… which can be a very difficult task for us especially when we are being prevented from helping others by people who work against us and against God!

Points to Ponder:
Do you help any charities?

How do you help others in your local church?

Leviticus 19:2  Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: “Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

Why do you behave the way you behave in this world? Do you mimic other people?

God does not want us to try and be like other people…

He wants us to be more Christ-like. This means being more righteous because He is righteous!

Psalm 34:22  The Lord will rescue his servants; no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

How real is your relationship with Christ? How honest are you? How important are you?

When we come to Christ humbly and honestly, He builds a good relationship with us.

Then when we need Him, He knows us and will help us!

Psalm 51:17  My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

How would you describe a broken spirit? Are you living in a right relationship with God?

Having a broken spirit does not mean we should be a useless bag of nails…

A broken spirit means we need to admit our faults and be brutally honest with God!

Psalm 138:3  When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.

When we call on the name of Christ, He gives us the courage and peace to follow Him with confidence.

We have hope because of what Christ did for us and continues to do.

We have a choice to make – call on Christ and live, or not and don’t!

Psalm 130:3  If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?

What would you do if someone kept a record of everything you did wrong?

What would you do if someone said they would help you do illegal things to gain treasures?

Be careful of the one who offers things before taking them away!

Deuteronomy 26:16  The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul.

God has always tried to warn people they should follow the rules – His rules.

God has always kept to those rules – His rules.

We need to take notice of them and work toward keeping them – for His sake and ours.

Romans 4:19  Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead – since he was about a hundred years old – and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.

How do you limit God in your life – what restrictions do you impose on Him?

Are you ready to open you life fully to allow God the space He needs to work?

Will you listen to God and do what He is asking to get the most out o everything around you?

Psalm 79:11  May the groans of the prisoners come before you; with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.

Have you noticed how Jesus went out of His way to protect the oppressed?

Have you seen how He looked after the sick and poor?

God alone is powerful enough to overcome this world and all the people of it!

Psalm 50:18  When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.

How many times have you copied someone doing something wrong because it seemed like a good idea at the time?

The evil one will use whomever and whatever he can to distract you from God’s word so you falter and fall!

Listen to God and obey His word!

Psalm 31:4  Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge.

What are the biggest temptation which are staring us right in the face?

Are you ready to put them aside to love and serve your neighbours instead?

Will you allow Christ to give you what you need instead of pride making you grasp at what you desire?

Isaiah 43:27  Your first father sinned; those I sent to teach you rebelled against me.

How often do you have to make amends for someone else’s problems?

We are surrounded by sinners and because of that we have to put up with the consequences of their actions.

No matter what others have done, it is not our fault!

Psalm 105:17  and he sent a man before them – Joseph, sold as a slave.

God made sure a young man, discarded by his brothers, served as a slave, would be used for greater things!

Just as Jesus picked people of low esteem, God too picks people He knows will fulfil the job.

Allow God to guide you where you are needed, not where people think you should be...

Micah 7:15  ‘As in the days when you came out of Egypt, I will show them my wonders.’

Nothing is impossible with God. He is willing and able to do anything!

If we come to Him with honest and open hearts, He is willing to forgive and forget our sins.

No matter what we have done in the past, we can put everything behind us and move forward with God!

1 Corinthians 1:20  Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

Who do you look up to as being wise and a teacher of the scriptures?

Jesus made the teachers of the law look foolish when He confronted them.

Allow Jesus to work no matter how much you think He is doing something different!

Luke 4:29  They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.

How do you actually treat Christ in your life?

Do you shout at Him for not doing things your way? Do you tell Him what to do?

Or do you come to Him with an open heart and ask for His help, waiting patiently?
